Introduction

.am is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Armenia, primarily used in Armenia and Artsakh. It is currently managed and operated by the Armenia Network Information Center (AM NIC), which is overseen by the Internet Society of Armenia (ISOC-AM).

The .am country top-level domain is often associated with AM radio broadcasting (Amplitude Modulation) due to the abbreviation. As a result, it is commonly used for broadcasting, radio stations, and audio-related services. For example, the mobile photo-sharing service Instagram uses the Armenian domain Instagr.am. The real-time video streaming service Stre.am incorporates this top-level domain into their key operation keyword "Stream." American music artist and producer will.i.am uses this domain as his website address. Such unconventional uses of top-level domains in domain names are referred to as domain hacks.

In 2014, a new Armenian top-level domain was introduced specifically for Armenian language domains. This top-level domain is .հայ (pronounced as "hy"), with the Punycode encoding xn--y9a3aq, derived from the Armenian ethnic name. It was officially launched in 2016.

Registration rules

1. Domain name registration requires a 3-day review period.
2. .am domain names must be a minimum of 3 characters and a maximum of 63 characters; they can only consist of English letters (a-z, case-insensitive), numbers (0-9), and hyphens ("-"). Spaces and special characters (such as !, $, &, ?) are not allowed, and hyphens cannot be used at the beginning or end of the domain name.
3. The registry has identified a list of domain names (referred to as the "government domain list") that can only be held by entities established in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. This list includes but is not limited to domain names such as "armenia.am," "armenia.com.am," "armenian.com.am," "armenia.co.am," "armenian.co.am," "armenia.org.am," "armenian.org.am," "armenia.net.am," "armenian.net.am," "հայաստան.հայ," "հայ.հայ," and "հայկական.հայ."

Any disputes related to this policy (including domain name registration, renewal, domain holder voluntarily registering a new domain to change domain holder, refusal of domain registration, revocation of domain registration (renewal), registry, registrar, rights, obligations and responsibilities of domain holders, interpretation, violation, invalidity of paragraphs in this policy, etc.) must be finally resolved through the arbitration body of the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Armenia, in accordance with its regulations (hereinafter referred to as the Regulations).
The composition of the arbitration panel and the number of arbitrators shall be determined in accordance with the Rules. The place of arbitration shall be the city of Yerevan, Republic of Armenia, and the language of arbitration shall be Armenian. The arbitration decision as provided in the Rules shall be final, binding, and applicable to the registry, registrar, domain holders, and other entities related to this policy; if not voluntarily complied with, it may be enforced by any competent court.
